World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18 April to raise awareness about preserving human heritage, diversity, and vulnerability of the world’s built monuments and heritage sites. Also, the efforts required to protect and conserve it and to draw attention towards it.
The genesis of the World Heritage Day
On 18 April 1982 on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS in Tunisia, it was suggested to observe the “International Day for Monuments and Sites” simultaneously throughout the world.
UNESCO passed a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983 approving the idea and recommended the member states to examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year “International Monuments and Sites Day”.This has been referred to as the World Heritage Day.
Importance Of World Heritage Day
The World Heritage Day 2019 theme was rural landscapes. Protecting and preserving heritage rural sites requires the collective efforts of the entire international community. It is important for travelers to know how they can contribute to nurturing heritage sites.
Usually, local and foreign experts and personalities are invited for seminars calling attention to this day in cultural centers, city halls, and other public spaces. In addition to that, organizations or people who have made an outstanding contribution to the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage receive recognition via certificates and awards. Special awareness-raising activities among school children and youth are also held around the world.
