Louisiana is the 25th most populous and the 31st most extensive of the 50 states of the United States. It lies in the southeastern region of the United States. The state attained statehood on April 30, 1812, becoming the 18th state to join the union. Here are some fun facts about Louisiana.

1. The Louisiana State Capitol Building is the country’s tallest state capital. The structure was dedicated on May 16, 1931. It stands at 450 feet tall with 34 stories. Long was slain at the State Capitol, which he had directed, in September of 1935.

2. The moniker “Pelican State” stems from the large number of pelicans that used to live along the state’s gulf coast.

3. Louisiana’s official flag was adopted in 1912, one hundred years after the state was established.

4. Since 1541, Louisiana has been governed under ten different flags.

5. The first natural gas field in Louisiana was discovered in 1823. At a depth of 400 feet, it was discovered.

6. Louisiana was once one of the wealthiest places in America due to its fertile soil. Indigo, sugar, and cotton enabled the statesmen to become some of the wealthiest people in the country.

7. Fight Club, The Butler, The Apostle, Skeleton Key, and Crazy in Alabama, to name a few, were all filmed in Houma, Louisiana. The comic book titles Swamp Thing and Suicide Squad both take place in Houma.
