Oklahoma is the 28th most populous and the 20th largest of the 50 United States’ states. It is located in the United States South Central region. On November 16, 1907, the state was granted statehood, making it the 46th state to join the union.

Here are some interesting facts about Oklahoma.

1. Oklahoma City, commonly abbreviated as OKC, is the state capital and largest city in the United States. It is located towards the state’s center, along the North Canadian River (recently renamed the Oklahoma River within city limits).

2. Oklahoma City has a population of around 650,000 people as of September 2019. It is the United States’ 27th most populous city.

3. With a total size of 1,600 square kilometers, the city is one of the largest in the country (600 square miles). The average elevation of Oklahoma City is 366 meters (1,201 feet) above sea level.

4. Oklahoma City was founded on April 22, 1889, when the “unassigned lands” (land in Indian territory that had not been assigned to any tribes) were made available for settlement in an event known as “The Land Run.”

5. On June 10, 1910, Oklahoma City became the state’s capital, displacing Guthrie, the territorial capital, as the new state’s population and commercial center.

6. Center city population dropped throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as families followed newly constructed highways to newer housing in adjacent suburbs, as it did in many other American cities.
