1. Google was originally named BackRub.
Page and Brin worked on a groundbreaking “web crawler” project called BackRub in 1996. Some believe the early search engine’s nomenclature was a reference to backlink retrieval. BackRub, which connected to Brin and Page’s original ‘90s-themed homepages, stayed on Stanford’s servers for more than a year before eating up too much bandwidth.
